MARTINA FAVA
'Challenging the Concept of Beauty and Normalising the Unconventional through Creative Visual Representation'

Martina’s dissertation is inspired by her own relationship with beauty. Here, she explores the concept of physical beauty and how this is perceived within our society. Although beauty is in fact arbitrary, we are very much pressured by adverts and by the media to look a certain way in order to be considered conventionally beautiful. Through her practice, Martina challenges this ideology and encourages people to embrace and flaunt their flaws. Taking a tongue in cheek approach, she creates branding and packaging marketing her own self as a product using the Maltese phrase ‘Minni Hekk’ (this is how I am). In her ‘campaign shots,’ she highlights her skin condition in order to inspire people to follow suit and challenge our ingrained idea of what beauty should be.
